In the Youth Engagement for Somalis Program, seven teenage Somali girls work on a cloth mural that will be displayed at Mayo Street Arts.

The first layer of the mural depicts images of inter-tribal violence in Somalia. The second layer offers images of hope and peaceful co-existence, including a depection of the Statue of Liberty wearing an red-white-and-blue hijab, a veil that covers the hair and is worn by Muslim women. The girls worked on the project while attending a summer camp operated by Youth Engagement for Somalis, a new group funded by Projects for Peace, a foundation based in Vermont. Yarmouth artist Kat Gillies worked with the girls on the mural project.
