Gordon Chibroski / Staff Photographer. Monday, July 30, 2012. Guided by Hannah McCain, Founder/Director of Youth Engagement for Somalis, third from left, and Kat Gillies, Artist in Residence, fifth from right, seven teenage Somali girls work on a cloth mural that will be displayed at Mayo Street Arts on Friday as part of the First Friday Art Walk. The first layer of the mural depicts images of inter-tribal violence in Somalia. The second layer offers images of hope and peaceful co-existence, including a depection of the Statue of Liberty wearing an red-white-and-blue hijab, a veil that covers the hair and is worn by Muslim women. The girls worked on the project while attending a summer camp operated by Youth Engagement for Somalis, a new group funded by Projects for Peace, a foundation based in Vermont. Yarmouth artist Kat Gillies worked with the girls on the mural project.
